How to Publish a Planner on Amazon - Print Notebooks on Demand with the Kindle Direct Publishing Tutorial

If you want to learn how I createdthis blog plannerand it's listed it internationally on Amazon, stick with it and you'll find out.

For the past few years, I've been teaching bloggers and small business ownershow to create ebookand other digital products they sell on their blogs to increase their online income.

Ebooks are a great way to educate your audience on a topic, but at the same time, you can offer your readers a physical resource in the form of a daily, monthly, or yearly planner to help them achieve their goals and get motivated.

In this article, I'll show you exactly how to come up with a lightweight book idea for your niche, create it, design it, and publish it on Amazon's print-on-demand (KDP) service:

Why should you choose to publish with Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing?

When I started to drawMein Blogging-Planer 2023, I knew I wanted to sell it in physical form rather than offering it as a print or digital product.

It was important to me that people could write and write things down by hand. Because when it comes to tracking your goals, writing them down and checking them off, I think it works a lot better when you have a physical planner.

And because I hadpublished an e-book on AmazonI knew beforehand that you could also publish standalone brochures with very good profits and no upfront costs.

BecauseKDP programallows anyone to publish e-books, books, notebooks and magazines, which are printed on demand. No need to order tons of copies from stock or box them up yourself, they do all the work!

Other benefits of the KDP Print-on-Demand service include:

  • Free to start.
  • You deserve60% royaltieson all sales.
  • Very low printing costs- Depending on the size of your planner, you can pay as little as $2-$4 to print it.
  • You will be listed on a marketplace that has millions of users, buyers and visitors every day.
  • You can scale your sales with Amazon-sponsored ads and reach a whole new audience.
  • Orders are processed and shipped automatically.

How much does it cost to make a planner?

You can create your own planner pages online for very, very cheap or even free.

It cost me $30-50 to design and publish this planner and I will walk you through the exact steps you can recreate to publish a paperback in your niche or in conjunction with your blog.

Here are the tools I used to create and publish this planner:

(Video) Create a Journal to Sell on Amazon KDP for FREE

  • A Canva Pro subscription- I used Canva to create my planner, uploaded custom templates and fonts, and saved my final work as a PDF. You can also use Canva's free account with some limitations. However, you need a PRO account to get commercial licenses for used fonts and themes. This is also where I create my cover photo.
  • Create package templates for planners– Instead of creating my pages from scratch, I used, combined and modified some existing Canva templates that I found here (and bought the commercial license for them, which allowed me to print and edit the final product for sale). See more templates created for youHere.
  • Fond-Bundles– purchased some custom fonts and uploaded them to Canva.
  • An Amazon KDP account- FREE to create. I already had one. I just paid about $10 for two author copies to be mailed to my address for final planner design approval.

Low content books are easier and faster to create compared to eBooks because you don't have to research the content - just plan it strategically. Planners require a little more design work (and I'll show you how I made that easy), but you can also publish custom notebooks where you just need them.Templates for lined journal pages.

But enough about my planner. Let me show you how to create your own daily planner - in a step-by-step system.

5 steps to create KDP schedulers

1. Choose a topic and niche for your planner

If you want to create something your audience will buy, the first step is to choose a purpose for your planners. What will people use it for? And who exactly are these people?

Research your niche. Ask your audience or pay attention to their needs and wants when it comes to planners or journals or even daily or weekly activities they are involved in.

Essentially, with lightweight books, you create the framework for people to enter their own thoughts, ideas, and notes. Your pages and content must therefore serve this purpose.

The first step is to decide what type of planner to create. Here are some options:

  • daily planner
  • weekly planner
  • quarterly planner
  • year planner
  • To-Do-Listen-Organizer
  • personal planner
  • self help planner
  • business planner
  • project plans
  • budget plans
  • financial advisor
  • Bullet-Journal
  • productivity planner
  • wedding planner

These are just a few examples that you can combine or specify: for example, an annual planner for new moms or a home planner for future homeowners. Choose a purpose and be clear with your audience.

2. Plan your planner sections

Once you figure that out, you'll want to plan the planner's sections and pages in your head. Remember to ensure that the content they contain serves the purpose you want to achieve.

If you want your planner to make tasks more manageable, add to-do lists, monthly tables, accountability diver pages, and so on.

How to Create KDP Developers for Amazon: She's Approach (1)

I modeled my planner around key stats and spreadsheets that my blog clients and I already use, so I knew the prompts, pages, and goal-setting exercises would be useful to my audience.

Also, the beauty of creating a daily, weekly, or yearly planner is that once you've created a specific section, you can easily replicate it for the remaining days, months, or years you want to include.

A really good tip for creating something that really helps your audience and stands out is to look at the Amazon reviews of other planners in your niche or similar niches. See what's missing and what you can improve. Then add it to your planner!

3. Create your planner for Amazon KDP in Canva

To bring your planner idea to life, you need to design and create your manuscript. See how:

STEP 1: CREATE A CANVA ACCOUNT

The best tool to create, design and export your PDF is Canva.

You can start with a free account, but I highly recommendUpgrade to a Canva PRO account. This will give you access to key features that will make this step easier and faster.

How to Create KDP Developers for Amazon: She's Approach (2)

The PRO account also allows you to import your own fonts and templates.

OBSERVATION:You cannot use Canva's free planner templates for KDP if you plan on reselling your planner. As tempting as it may be, you can use them for personal use only. The other included elements require special commercial licenses, so it's best to import your own fonts and customize your planner.

But before you do anything else, make sure you doCreate a Canva account here.

STEP 2: CHOOSE YOUR KDP PLANNER PAPERBOOK SIZE

Next you need to determine the size of your planner. This determines the size of your pages and overall design, as well as the actual size of the brochure that Amazon will print for you.

From there you have to chooseList of KDP print options.

This can be based on personal preference and depends on how thick or large you need the planner. But when creating KDP planners for Amazon, you now need to determine the exact dimensions of the pages and use those exact numbers in Canva to ensure they print perfectly.

Some popular planner sizes for KDP brochures are:

  • 8,5" x 11" (21,59 x 27,94 cm)
  • 6″ x 9″ (15,24 x 22,86 cm)
  • 5″ x 8″ (12,7 x 20,32 cm)
  • 5,06" x 7,81" (12,85 x 19,84 cm)
  • 8,27" x 11,69" (21 x 29,7 cm)
How to Create KDP Developers for Amazon: She's Approach (3)

Once you've chosen a size, create a new project in Canva with those dimensions, or resize the file you're working on to match them.

STEP 3: DESIGN YOUR PLANNER PAGES ON CANVA

When you're staring at the blank canvas in Canva, it's time to start creating! Here you can create your own planner pages. Start with your cover, content pages, dedication and introduction. Then proceed to create and design the sections planned in the previous step.

You can either create everything yourself from scratch (remember - you can't use existing Canva templates in the Canva library) or buy and import KDP planner templates as long as you have the commercial license to do so. That's what I did!

How to Create KDP Developers for Amazon: She's Approach (4)

I went furtherDesign-Packagesand found some Canva KDP planner templates that I liked the style of and bought them with the commercial licenses - meaning sellers let me use their work and modify them to sell on Amazon.

Here are some designs you might like for under $10:

(Video) Use This FREE Website To Create Unlimited Amazon KDP Ebooks FAST. Less than 10 Minutes.

I used a combination of several purchased templates and a few pages made from scratch to create my perfect planner.

I went in too, adding my own fonts and elements, and modifying the existing pages to suit the sections I had in mind, so the end result isn't too similar to other creators who may have used those pages.

You only need to create repeating pages (such as daily, weekly, monthly pages, to-do lists, etc.) once, then simply duplicate and move the pages where needed.

But using templates to get started has saved me a lot of time because I'm not a certified designer.

STEP 4: EXPORT YOUR PLANNER AS PDF

Once you're happy with how it looks, you can save your Canva design as a print-ready PDF.

Keep in mind that when creating Canva designs, you can have a maximum of 100 pages per design. This doesn't mean your diary should only be 100 pages long. But if you want it to be longer, you need to create two parts of it and then merge them together as PDF. I wear this PDF merger.

4. Create your KDP and Amazon Pocketbook account

Once you have your final manuscript in PDF, it's timeCreate your KDP accountand loads there. Creating an author account is really free and super easy.

Just follow the steps to create a sales planner or if you need additional guidance check out myE-book best-seller BootcampOf course, because I guide my students step by step through the entire process.

But if you already know how to do all that, you can skip straight to the part where you create your paperback in KDP, upload your manuscript, design your cover (I use Canva to create the main cover image and the cover builder). covers to do the rest) and publish your planner.

Last but not least, you want to preview your file and make sure everything looks good and fits between the printable bleed line. Amazon has an online preview that you really have to go through before you hit publish.

How to Create KDP Developers for Amazon: She's Approach (6)

This allows you to preview each page and approve the final manuscript. I also like to order copies from the author and check everything in a test planner before starting.

So voila! You have a physical slicer that Amazon distributes on your behalf that you can immediately promote and sell. How to publish a planner on Amazon in just 4 steps.
